PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (WABC) -- The New York Giants and Jets added a cornerback to the mix in the second round of the NFL Draft.
This was a major position of need for the Giants with Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome II slated as starters. Some around the league thought Colton Hood could be taken in the first round. The 6-foot, 195-pound cornerback fits in a John Harbaugh/Dennard Wilson defense as a physical outside corner willing to tackle and compete for 50/50 balls.
That's it for the Giants on Day 2.. The Giants used their third-round pick in this year's draft to take Jaxson Dart in 2025.
The selection of Hood leaves the Giants without an interior defensive lineman selected in their first three picks. This is notable because it's a position they intend to address after trading Dexter Lawrence II. There are expected to be some good run-stuffing options later in the draft. It will likely have to wait until Day 3.
The New York Jets used the 50th pick to draft Indian CB D'Angelo Ponds, has been compared to Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn: Same size (5-foot-9) and same speed (sub 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash). This would be a home run pick if Ponds, who the Jets drafted after trading down six spots (where they also acquired Pick 128), has the same kind of career. Ponds has heard the comparisons, saying Thursday night, "That's a testament to his game and my game. I think we have some similarities and that's definitely a compliment to me."
The Jets have five picks on Day 3, including three in the fourth round. The big question is whether they take a flyer on a developmental quarterback such as Penn State's Drew Allar, who drew interest from the Jets during the pre-draft process. They also have needs at safety, linebacker and interior offensive line.
Day 1 Recap
The Giants selected Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese with the fifth pick in the NFL draft, then took Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa at No. 10, sticking with their stance of going with the best players available rather than filling a need.
Reese, the first player drafted with coach John Harbaugh in charge, joins a defense that ranked 30th out of 32 teams in the league last season but already had a wealth of talent at the position with Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and the No. 3 pick a year ago, Abdul Carter. Mauigoa provides young protection for franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The Jets selected Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft and took Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq at No. 16.
They traded back into the first round Thursday night and took Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. at No. 30. Bailey provides coach Aaron Glenn with a strong pass-rushing presence for a defense that struggled last season.
Sadiq set a school record for tight ends with 51 receptions last season. Cooper was a major playmaker for No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza for national champion Indiana.
The Jets have endured 10 straight losing seasons and 15 years in a row without making the playoffs.
